I like trees. You like trees. I think it’s safe to say we all like trees, amirite? As a country we like trees so much that we actually designated a holiday for them. And that day, my friends is today. Today is Arbor Day — a day to plant trees to your little heart’s content.
And because who would I be if didn’t give you a little back story, here it is short and sweet. According to the history books, the Spanish village of Mondoñedo held the first documented arbor plantation festival in the world in 1594, organized by its mayor, who apparently loved trees. The first American Arbor Day wasn’t until 1872 in Nebraska City, Nebraska. It was started by Julius Sterling Morton, who also apparently loved trees and thought that Nebraska’s landscape would benefit from the wide-scale planting of trees (#yeahitcould). Impressively, an estimated one million trees were planted in Nebraska on that first Arbor Day, and in the years to follow other states started to follow suit proclaiming their own Arbor Days. In 1970, President Richard Nixon made fetch happen on the federal level — officially declaring the last Friday in April as National Arbor Day. Today, Arbor Day and variations of are celebrated around the world.
So, with that in honor of Arbor Day, I’m highlighting some great companies that plant trees with every purchase (because, let’s be real, some of us live in cities/are lazy and planting trees is hard).
If you were looking for a way to do basically nothing and still make a positive impact, this is it. Technically not planting trees with every purchase, Ecosia lets users plant trees by simply searching the web. Wait, what? Yea, long story short, here’s how it works: 1) You search the web using the Ecosia search engine, 2) AdsSearch ads generate income for Esocia, and 3) Ecosia uses this income to plant trees. The Berlin based company donates 80% of its surplus ad revenue to nonprofit conservationist organizations that plant trees. To date, the search engine has raised almost $3 million for reforestation projects and planted over 7.5 million trees in Peru, Madagascar, Indonesia and Burkina Faso. And, the Certified B Corp is working towards a goal to plan one billion trees by 2020. You can learn more form Ecosia and explore their financial reports here.

I’ve talked about Amour Vert before, but just to recap, Amour Vert was founded on the belief that great fashion didn’t have to be sacrificed for social responsibility. All of their products are American made and use non-toxic dyes and sustainable fabrics. They also have a zero-waste philosophy and have committed to planting a tree for every purchase of an Amour Vert T-shirt (they’re currently at 100,000 and counting).
What do you get when you combine one part Italian watch enthusiast with two parts eco-smart entrepreneurs? WeWOOD. WeWOOD marries technology with nature in their creations, using mostly scrap wood combined with state-of-the-art movements to create really cool watches (they also make some pretty rad eyewear). Not only does the company use eco-friendly materials, they also plant one tree for every watch that is purchased. Since their inception in 2011, the company has planted 420,000 trees with the goal of planting 1 million trees by 2020. And who woodn’t want to help (really cheesy/bad pun totally intended)?
Treez believes that art and fashion can help bring back beauty into our world. “What beauty?” you ask (silly question this far into the blog post). Trees, of course. Every time you buy one of Treez products, they plant a tree on your behalf. The company creates beautiful and unique jewelry and accessories (often incorporating wood) that in addition to planting a tree also serve as a reminder of the beauty of trees. They even let you track your tree — with your purchase you get a copy of your TREEZ code with which you are able to geolocate the tree planted on your behalf, as well as a tree planting certificate.
And because we all like wine, we can’t forget the fine people at Trinity Oaks. Buy a bottle of wine from Trinity Oaks and they’ll plant a tree. Who said you couldn’t get drunk while being an arborist (probably no one)? Through their OneBottleOneTree program and their partnership with Trees for the Future, Trinity Oaks has helped plant over 17 million trees since they started the program in 2008. I’ll drink to that. No seriously, it’s Friday, where’s my wine?
